Controlling Siding Distortion: Knowing the Cause

In controlling siding distortion, one must know the cause of it first. To determine the cause of it, one must understand that there are factors to consider that can affect the longevity of the vinyl siding.

The extremity of the weather is actually one of the factors in determining how long vinyl siding lasts. In either dry or damp climate, melting vinyl is possible. But the most common cause of this is the sun’s rays.

One of the main reasons for the increase in instances of melted vinyl is the use of high-performance glazing.High-performance glazing is usually attributed to Low-E (or low-solar-gain) windows. These glass windows have a solar heat-gain coefficient, which means that it has a high solar reflectance. These are high-quality windows which mean that the excess energy is being reflected somewhere else.

Home inspectors and glass experts have agreed that to reduce glare is to lessen the risk of siding distortion. The vinyl melting point is very low. It is approximately 160 to 165 degrees Fahrenheit. When the temperature reaches these points, there is a high chance that the siding will distort.

Controlling siding distortion doesn’t necessarily mean that you will be able to monitor the direction of the sun’s rays or be able to control the weather, because that's impossible. However, experts have recommended some easy fixes as alternatives.

  • Considering fiber cement siding as an alternative

While fiber cement siding can be a bit on the expensive side, it will not distort from the sun’s rays. Furthermore, its durability is one of the reasons why homeowners make the switch.

  • Convincing your neighbour to put screens over their Low-E windows

Putting screens over Low-E windows is one of the most convenient ways of controlling siding distortion. This is a cheap solution in order to reduce window reflection. Ask your neighbour to cover those windows and it will save you a lot of trouble in replacing your own vinyl sidings.

So how long does vinyl siding last? Well, it all depends on how the external forces of nature directly affect your vinyl siding. Controlling siding distortion is difficult but it is not impossible. You can opt for one of the best solutions in the market like the application of perforated window films. With Siding Guard Window Film, you can prevent siding distortion and save money at the same time.
